Web Design Showcases £38m Fundraising Achievements

Website Design Fundraising Achievements

Bernie Hollywood OBE, a philanthropist from Liverpool, has raised over £38 million for UK and overseas charities in the last 30 years. Now, the 55-year-old fundraising champion and father of two has teamed up with local digital marketing agency Web Design by SIGMA, to showcase his outstanding achievements and momentous 30-year journey through a striking website.

After sadly losing both parents to cancer within six months, Speke-born Bernie was inspired to run the Bolton Marathon in 1985 and has since run more than 100 marathons, 250 half marathons and cycled more than 10,000 miles. Bernie who now lives in Bromborough is also the world-record holder for running the furthest in seven days after completing 358 miles from John O’Groats to Carlisle in a week on his way to Land’s End a total of 1,000 miles the equivalent of 40 consecutive marathons in 20 days!

Bernie has spent much of his life raising cash and awareness for seven charities and sits on the board of three, and advises many more including The Memusi FoundationWallace & Gromit Children's CharitySave the Children, and Barnardo's. In 2013, the spotlight was also shone on his hard work when he was awarded an OBE for his services to charity in the New Years Honours List. A chance meeting with Matthew Norton at a charity awards ceremony six years ago led to the pair establishing The Memusi Foundation, an organisation that works to develop the school infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa to help children escape poverty. Since its formation, the foundation has provided schooling & community care for 1500 children for the very first time in their lives.

The sheer magnitude of support and generosity over the years has been phenomenal. However, many of our supporters understandably want to keep up to date with the activities and progress of our different projects. This sparked the idea to develop the new website and SIGMA bowled me over with their ideas from the start.

SIGMA, who already supports Bernie’s work by donating 5% of every website order to the Memusi Foundation, worked to come up with a design concept that would embody Bernie’s philosophy.

As well as raising funds, Bernie works constantly to empower communities here and overseas by encouraging people to impart their knowledge and skills, and helps to drive long-term value systems into businesses in the process. The creation of a simple, iconic and unmistakable 'Bernie' logo was our first step before building and launching www.berniehollywood.com, a fully responsive site with a sharp, clean and user-friendly design. The site is also integrated with other digital channels to enable Bernie to harness the power of social media to share his message far and wide. The website has already had over 40,000 hits since its launch in April, and we have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback so far.

Bernie and his cycling partner Jon Alexander, are now making final preparations to complete an Africa to Yorkshire Tandem Cycle Challenge, which will raise enough funds to build a new infant school in Kenya’s Rift Valley for over 200 children. Together with a six-strong support crew, the pair will set off for North Africa on 16th June to embark upon a journey that will take them through four countries and over the Pyrenees covering 1,700 miles.

We are lucky; we are living out our values every day, and thanks to Steve and the team at SIGMA; we now have the website to fully showcase that." Says Bernie. "But for now, all eyes are on the next challenge. Eat, sleep, cycle, repeat. At the start line, we are going to be 2 million revolutions from home, but we will be more spurred on than ever before!
